The Hoher Kasten is a mountain in the Appenzell Alps overlooking the Rhine in Eastern  Switzerland. It is located on the border between the cantons of Appenzell and St. Gallen.

The summit is easily accessible with a cable car starting at Brülisau which is located just south of Appenzell.

A revolving restaurant has been built at the top which offers panoramic views over the Appenzell region, and down the Rheintal towards Lake Constance, and from the top you can see almost all of the country of Leichtenstein.

The summit can be seen from up to 50 kilometres as it is the highest point in the area and the journey up to it by cable car offers the visitor spetacular views.

Referrals to the Hoher Kasten and the neighouring summit Kamor were described as far back as the early 19th century.

THe summit also is home to Swiss Telecommunication and relay equipment, being the highest point in the area it affords unobstructed receptions for the local television and radio broadcasts.

Make sure and take a camera with you if you visit the Hoher Kasten as the views are unmissable and you'll want to take some souvenirs back home.

There are also web cameras available from the Hoher Kasten with 360 degree panoramic views
