Pete Escovedo - Pittsburg, California

Legendary pecussionist Pete Escovedo is an artist who broke down the barriers between Smooth Jazz, Latin Jazz and Contemporary music.
artist

Peter Michael Escovedo was born July 13, 1935 in Pittsburg, California and is known worldwide for his live performances, his time with the Santana Band, session work and his solo albums.

Pete grew up in a small house with his mom, dad, sisters and brothers. As full as the house was with family there was always room for more guests and musicians constantly visited the house to play as music was an intregal part of this gifted family.

Pete started playing saxophone in school, but It didn’t take long to discover that this was definitely not his calling. He decided to try another instrument, i.e. bongos. His first bongo set was made out of coffee cans and tape, he painted them himself and practiced constantly as he was determined to master them.

In 1960 his siblings Coke and Phil joined Pete and together they formed The Escovedo Brothers Latin Jazz Sextet. They played all over town carrying their own instruments on the bus to get to their gigs and earn $50 p.n.. They did however play in famous places like the Matador, Jazz Workshop, The Tropics and The Basin St. West.

The three brothers stuck together and after their late night gigs they would get something to eat and talk about music, traveling and they always dreamed of becoming famous one day. Music was everything to them, it was their life.

In 1972 Pete and Coke went on tour with guitarist Carlos Santana who is synonymous with bands with multiple driving percussion rhythms and toured with the Santana Band for more than three years, performing internationally and recording seminal albums such as Moonflower (which yielded hits such as Carnaval, Let The Children Play, Bahia, Europa, She's Not There and El Morocco et al on this vanguard double set), other albums included Oneness and Inner Secrets.

To have this amazing opportunity to play percussion with Santana was like a dream come true that Pete would never forget, but something in his soul was still yearning for another avenue for his creativity. Pete’s vision grew even bigger, he needed to make a name for 'himself' and for the style of music that kept playing in his head. He finally decided that it was time to leave the Santana Band.
