Pfänder is a mountain above Bregenz in Austria and has a unique panorama of Lake Constance (Bodensee) and enjoys views of 240 Alpine peaks of Austria, Germany and Switzerland and spectacular views across the lake which is 63 by 14 kilometers in size. This makes Pfänder Mountain the most famous and 'must see' lookout point in the region. (View the Pfaender Gallery)
Bregenz lies at the foot of the mountain on the lakeshores.
With good visibility the view from the summit reaches from the Allgäu in Southern Germany to the Lech Valley in the neighbouring county of Tirol in the east, over to the Bregenz Forest (Bregenzerwald) the steep mountain peaks of Arlberg region, to Silvretta in Montafon, and on to the Rätikon in the Swiss mountains, and to the foothills of the Black Forest (Schwartzwald) in the west in Germany. Below is Lake Constance which is surrounded by the Rhine Valley (Rheintal) and the Swabian hills of Germany's Baden Wuerttemberg.
The Pfänder Tunnel below takes the A14 motorway underneath Pfänder bypassing Bregenz to Hoerbranz in Germany. This is a now a dual carriageway tunnel which opened in July 2013.
The summit of Pfänder can be reached by a cable car called the Pfänderbahn with the base station situated in Bregenz. The cable car covers a height difference of over 600m in circa 6 minutes.
Visitors can frequent the café at the top of the mountain, buy souvenirs and snacks, or visit the petting zoo. Many walk the pathway down to Bregenz or to other routes towards the Bregenz Forest.
In winter skiers use the mountain as a practice slope down the short elevation or as a toboggan run.
There are spectacular views to enjoy of sunsets in summer and winter over the lake and also across tot he Swiss mountains.
