Schoppernau is a village in the Bregenzerwald Region (the Bregenz district) of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg.
It is part of the Bregenzerwald Umgang (literally "Bregenzerwald Walking Tour"). This walking tour offers insights into the architecture and community planning of 12 traditional villages in the Bregenzerwald region.
Whilst walking over various landscapes, visiting public buildings, homes and everyday objects, walkers gain a comprehensive overview of the typical Bregenzerwald architectural styles as they have developed throughout the ages.
The nine buildings chosen for the walking tour in Schoppernau include the Alpine Cheese Dairy (Bergkäserei), several farmhouses, an old sawmill, the fire department and the local primary school.
The unmistakable 19th century half-timbered farmhouses in Schoppernau present many typical features of the unique Bregenzerwald farm architecture, particularly their joined timber beams sealed with moss and their wooden tiles which turn grey with age.
In Vorarlberg, Austria, Schoppernau is renowned for the song "Vo Mello bis ge Schoppornou"
The village's cable car is the starting point for skiers and paragliders to ascend to the Diedamskopf top station with spectacular views around the Alps and a restaurant offers warm meals and snacks. Adventurous walkers can descend from the top station down to the village.
Cross country skiers
have an excellent selection of tracks around the village which is overshadowed by the tall mountains which keep the tracks from melting in sunlight.
There are many fine restaurants in the village and a wonderful bakery and café offering local breads, pastries and cakes.
Schoppernau is also a waypoint on the Bregenzerwald route from Bregenz to Warth and Lech in Vorarlberg along the 200 Road and a popular stop off with vehicles and motorcycles in all seasons.
