Bassist Roberto Vally was born and bred in Brooklyn, New York, but nowadays is based in Los Angeles where two of his great passions :-playing music professionally and surfing come together.
artist

Roberto first exploded on to the music scene at the ripe old age of 9. His parents were amazed by his enthusiasm towards music whilst he was still in diapers, it was his 4th grade music teacher who discovered his natural born gift of perfect pitch and an uncanny aptitude for the acoustic bass.

With his enthusiasm to learn the electric bass he joined several neighbourhood bands, often playing for church dances, block parties and affairs, Roberto officially turned 'pro' by age of 11, hence the beginning of his long and masterful career as a world renowned bassist and songwriter.

During his formative years spent in New York City Roberto's musical talents were highly enriched through an in-depth exposure to many musical styles e.g. Classical, Jazz, Latin, Funk, Rock, Hip-Hop, Pop and Soul music which all became an integral part of his musical palette.

Years of traveling and performing with notable artists around the world have made Roberto's already broad repertoire, now one of outstanding magnitude. The combination of his innate groove, musicality, dexterity and worldwide playing experience make Roberto a world-class bass virtuoso, and as many will attest to, with a heart as big as his 6 string bass guitar.

Often you would find the young Roberto skipping classes to hang out in the 'band room', but in spite of his less than perfect conduct, he was honored with his junior high school's Music Honor Award. It was clear that Roberto was destined to pursue an education that centered on music.

From 1975 - 1978 he attended New York City's legendary High School of Music and Art, which was depicted in the TV serial Fame in 1980. He continued his education in music theory and classical bass by attending the highly acclaimed Julliard School from 1976 - 1978. There, most notably, he was mentored by the prominent professor and classical bassist, Homer Mensch.

Roberto loved every minute of his bass education, but the itch to perform and take his skills on the road eventually took hold of him. In 1979 he was approached by an R&B / Funk band that gigged in the US and Canada. His ferocious playing and charismatic stage presence were extraordinary and from then on there was no stopping him.

His skills and thirst for fun and adventure brought him overseas to Europe whereby he not only gigged, but mastered surfing and skiing. Perhaps unbeknown to him at the time in the midst of his playing on stage, on slopes and on surf boards, Roberto was building a remarkable set of 'chops' that come only from ' live stage ' experiences.

Further years of honing live performance skills really paid off when he auditioned with Spyro Gyra.
